Aug. 9th, 2007 01:34 amsince it's blog against racism week, i thought i would mention something weird i noticed a long time ago. both of the secretaries of state of the bush administration were black: colin powell and condoleezza rice. aside from sec. alphonso jackson, of the department of housing, these were the only black people in the cabinet.
obviously there is a tokenistic character when "the black guy" resigns and you appoint another "the black guy". but why to secretary of state?
well, bush was about twenty-five, and cheney was about thirty, when the original star trek aired. the secretary of state is mostly a diplomat, or in other words, communications officer. star trek aired around 1970, and colin powell became secretary of state in 2000. i therefore predict that the first black president will be elected (does that change anything from appointed?) near 2025, thirty years after star trek: deep space nine ran.
[but this was the opposite of true! — cola, Dec 2008]
