Do you think the stars are proud of us?
At nights we used to look up at them,
but now the lights are too bright for that.
There are clouds between me and them this evening,
the bowl of the sky is grim and dark.
The beautiful stars are all missing.

Yes, once we looked up at all the stars,
On clear nights we could see all of them.
It seemed they were a book written for us,
If we were only clever enough to read it.
This is not a figure of speech at all.
The planets' motions were a cipher
In which many other things turned out to be written.

On the two shores of the city,
From the famous bridge,
A thousand yellow and white lights are here!
There are rows and rows here,
In imitation of the sky;
More indecipherable, and more luminous.
The stars themselves taught us how!

We will not be surprised now
That scientists come from small towns
And countries dark at night
Where they can see stars.
