Andrew,
Your request is unusual. I've contacted the course instructor, Dr. Gordon Slade, and he tells me he has no objection to you informally attending his lectures.
I gets attend lectures.

Edit: My sister is coming home for a few days in order that our family can go to Grandpa's wake as a group. She is arriving at the airport about now, and (I hope) Mom is picking her up. Dad and I were supposed to be there too, but he got back late from climbing.
(For anyone who cares, we will be leaving on Sept 5 and we'll be gone about a week. Plz not rob house.)
She has been doing something? going to the University of Amsterdam? at any rate, she has been in Europe for a year or two, so it's been a long time since I saw her last and I will be very happy to see her again.
Also, *after* sending the email to Prof. Gupta, I figured out that UBC fall courses start on Sept 5 (oh no!) but that the course I asked to take is a winter course and starts in January (!?). I had better find something else to do this autumn, or see whether the kindly Professor Slade will also let me attend the lectures for the prerequisite course. (which I think I have some kind of grip on, but why not?) :)
